The European Green Deal: A Paradigm Shift for Our Economic Model?

Im Rahmen des Genshagener Forums für deutsch-französischen Dialog fand am 17. Juni eine Diskussionsveranstaltung mit Pascal Canfin, Vorsitzender des Ausschusses für Umweltfragen, öffentliche Gesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit im Europäischen Parlament, und Florence Schulz, Journalistin vom Tagesspiegel Background Energie & Klima zu der Frage statt, inwiefern der europäische Green Deal einen Paradigmenwechsel für die Wirtschaft bedeutet.

The European Union is at a turning point regarding its Green Deal and post-crisis recovery. The “Fit for 55” package that plans to reform 50 European legislative acts by the end of 2022 raises some important questions. How can the previous path of economic development in the EU be significantly changed to enable a climate-neutral European economy by 2050 without fracturing our societies? As the time has come to implement the ambitious objectives of the Green Deal, what are the perspectives for the legislative package mid-July and the general prospects of success in the next months? What potential areas of cooperation and conflict exist between Member States on these issues? Are we noticing a fundamental paradigm shift in our economic model, or are there still significant obstacles to overcome? What role can France and Germany play in meeting these challenges?

These and further questions were discussed by Florence Schulz, French--German journalist at Tagesspiegel Background Energie & Klima with Pascal Canfin, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) during a one-hour Breakfast Talk on 17 June 2021.
